Our Privilege, Our Duty

Today is a pretty big day in America. Correction: Today has the potential to be a documented day in history. A chance for the American people stand up to their government and say "enough is enough" and exercise their right to vote. This is the voice of the American people and it's almost the only thing we have left. I am a bundle of excited nerves awaiting the end result of this day.

For anyone who knows me will laugh in agreement when I say this: I am a passionate person. Perhaps when we first meet, I may stay quiet and observe, but inside I'm analyzing and configuring, trying to see where I fit in our new-found friendship. This is of course, my way of being respectful. In no way am I judging, it's just the way I roll. But once you have earned my trust, you will learn that I have certain passions in life. Yes, I do like the bed to be made just so, and the living room should be in order before shutting off the lights at night, but these are just quirks.

One thing that brings out the fiery side is my love for politics and government. I add a disclaimer that I have a difficult time saying "politics," for the word has such negative connotations. Politics is often seen as being shady, corrupt, and in most cases, evil. For what I love is liberty. I revere the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. I believe they are two documents that have set in motion the most incredible nation to ever exist. It is their foundation that contains an infallible truth that we are all endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights, among them, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I believe in Divine Providence, and that God our Creator, had (and still has) His hand in the workings of this nation. I believe our Founding Fathers were some of the most extraordinary individuals who had the gift of seeing beyond themselves and their generation to unseen future generations; to my generation and beyond. Their writings and works (and not the textbook versions, mind you) give insight into their desire and desperate need for God in their new republic.  As George Washington said,

“It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible.”

Unfortunately, we've come a long way since then, and are now under the governing of countless politicians who want nothing more than to do away with the Constitution and all it stands for. God has been removed from our schools, courthouses, and even our public vocabularies. It's a messed up world, and this is just a soapbox post. I'd be more than happy to delve into a serious and in-depth discussion of all things political at your local Starbucks ~ If you're not afraid of the passion of course *wink*.

For now, I will just excitedly anticipate the hopeful outcome of this Election Day, 2010. I trust America is getting out the vote today. We have it so easy here ~ We need only hop in our car and drive down to our local town office, pick up a pencil or press a few buttons and vote. I find it shameful that we have a mid-term elections turn-out of 38% when it brings us no harm to do so. Remember the Iraqi elections in 2005? They risked their lives to vote for the first time, and even proudly displayed their ink-dipped fingers (a protection against double voting fraud). I found this photo online that should speak volumes:

{"A young Iraqi girl asked for her finger to be inked even though she was too young to vote in this Iraq election. Iraqis voted in Sunday's election as insurgents killed 38 people across the country, unleashing a barrage of mortars intent on disrupting the historic day."}
Though November 2, 2010 could very well be a day for the history books with a huge House and Senate turnover...November 3, 2010 is when the work starts. I pray we see the change we actually need.
